Where we’re going

2010-2012 Strategic Direction

Vision

In a world that has war and conflict, people’s human rights are protected.

Mission

The Humanitarian Crisis Hub works with community groups that promote the human rights of people
living in war and conflict. We support their initiatives; provide resources, information and training;
facilitate dialogue and shared learning; build networks; and seek to amplify their voices at local, national
and international levels.

Overview

The Humanitarian Crisis Hub aims to improve the protection and self-protection of people living in
armed conflict and other humanitarian crises around the world and works to ensure that Australia
contributes effectively to this protection, both at a governmental level and through community-level
initiatives.

The Humanitarian Crisis Hub supports individuals and communities in Australia who have been affected
by war and conflict and seek lasting peace in their countries of birth/origin. Whilst refugees and migrants
have made Australia their home, the suffering and loss they may have experienced in their flight from
conflict lives on in their hearts and minds. They may have family members and friends still struggling to
survive, or to live with dignity.

These are the people who hold the most intimate understanding of a conflict and, as such, they must
have a greater voice in the debates that occur in Australia around those conflicts. Their increased
participation in such debates will have several effects. For the refugees and migrants themselves, it can
be a process of empowerment through which they exercise their democratic rights, as well as create
and strengthen networks within Australian society. For the broader Australian community and
government, it will result in greater awareness of new Australians who have experienced war and
conflict, thus building mutual respect and sensitivity regarding these highly emotive issues.

Ultimately, the voices of refugees, migrants and other Australians have the potential to compel Australia
to take a more balanced and humanitarian approach in international debates and actions on war and
conflict.

The Humanitarian Crisis Hub model is unique, as it combines international human rights action on war
and conflict with a community development approach. It directly supports community groups’ initiatives;
provides resources, information and training; and facilitates dialogue, shared learning and network
building. While community groups frequently carry out a broad range of activities, such as cultural and
social events, the Humanitarian Crisis Hub focuses its support exclusively on human rights and
humanitarian issues.

The Humanitarian Crisis Hub was founded in 2008 and is independent of political or religious affiliation.
